In today’s episode, we will provide an overview of an alternative investment known as iron-air batteries.

0:08
Iron-air batteries are emerging as a promising energy storage solution, particularly for the national energy grid, offering several advantages over traditional lithium batteries.

0:22
Developed by Form Energy, a spin-off from MIT, iron-air batteries are attracting attention due to their cost-effectiveness, abundance of raw materials, longer lifespan, and improved safety features compared with lithium-based batteries.

0:37
Iron-air batteries do not recharge quickly, making them less suitable for applications such as smartphones, laptops, or electric vehicles. However, their strength lies in providing extended energy storage duration.

0:48
This makes them a viable option for national grids and other large-scale energy storage systems. With the ability to store energy for up to 100 hours, iron-air batteries have the potential to integrate seamlessly with solar parks, wind farms, and other renewable energy sources.

1:06
In addition to longer storage duration, iron-air batteries also offer environmental benefits. Their manufacturing process is less harmful to the environment compared with lithium batteries, and reduced reliance on lithium could help relieve pressure on global supply chains.

1:24
Each battery is roughly the size of a washing machine and consists of about 50 cells surrounded by an electrolyte.

1:31
Charging and discharging occur through a rusting process. During discharge, the battery uses oxygen from the air to convert iron into iron oxide, commonly known as rust. During charging, the process reverses, converting rust back into iron and releasing oxygen.

1:53
Recognising the potential of iron-air batteries, Form Energy has secured partnerships with the state of West Virginia and attracted investment from prominent figures such as Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates.

2:05
These efforts will support the establishment of a battery manufacturing plant in West Virginia, projected to create 750 new full-time jobs and represent a total investment of up to $760 million, including approximately $290 million provided by the state.

2:21
This initiative aligns with the state’s clean energy goals and is among the first projects expected to benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022.

2:31
Additionally, Xcel Energy has announced plans to jointly construct a 4 to 5 acre iron-air battery farm with Form Energy, targeting operational readiness by 2025.

2:43
As iron-air batteries continue to develop and be deployed, they hold significant promise for enhancing energy storage capabilities, supporting renewable energy integration, and contributing to a more sustainable future.

2:54
By leveraging their cost-effectiveness, long duration, and environmentally friendly characteristics, iron-air batteries have the potential to revolutionise grid-scale energy storage and help facilitate the transition to a cleaner and more reliable energy infrastructure.
